Faerie Foraging Walk
Discover the hidden power of plants that are right under your nose!
Service Description
Dorothy believes passionately that anyone can learn the skills to forage safely. She enjoys sharing her extensive herbal wisdom and teaching people how to forage responsibly for common wild herbs. Many of the most useful plants are not rare and exotic ones, but the ones that are often overlooked, growing on your own doorstep. Dorothy will help you mindfully connect with the natural world on a foraging foray and open your eyes to the fascinating ways you can benefit from your own local herbal treasure trove. Dorothy, The Foraging Faerie (BSc Botany, MSc Applied Plant Science) Dorothy lives in Limekilns and grew up foraging in the Scottish Borders. She was taught how to recognise and gather local wild foods by her Mum. Her love of plants led to Dorothy studying Botany at the University of Aberdeen where she led a botanical expedition to the Ivory Coast, West Africa to complete her Honours project, and also met her future husband. She was sponsored by the former Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (Scotland) to study for a Masters degree in Applied Plant Science at Imperial College (Wye) and was regularly seen cycling along the country lanes of Kent with her flowing dresses and wicker basket full of apples and wild herbs. Dorothy carried on botanising and foraging whilst working part-time and raising her two children in South Queensferry. She kept her knowledge up to date by attending herbology classes, and volunteering with her children at local community plant events. She refreshed her botanical skills by completing and graduating with a Certificate in Herbology (with distinction) from the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh during the first lockdown. Her first organised foraging walk was at the first Wellbeing Social in September 2021 (#theforagingfaerie). Dorothy retired from her office job in January and continues to enjoy sharing her extensive herbal wisdom and teaching people how to forage responsibly for common wild herbs. She loves giving people hands-on experience in gathering herbs and mixing herbal potions. Dorothy holds regular Plant and Potions (community foraging walks) in Limekilns and the surrounding area, offers mini hands on Plants and Potions sessions at her local Carers group and volunteers at Limekilns Primary School to teach a foraging class.
